NOTE: Now updated to reflect new dates.

In lieu of class Thursday (11/12), I’m going to ask you to watch the series of videos below (it’ll take you just more than an hour) and write a roughly 300-word response in which you connect Michael Wesch’s ideas with journalism and its emerging forms online. Please post your response in the comments section before Tuesday’s class (11/17).

An anthropological introduction to YouTube, 55 min. 33 sec.

The Machine is Us/ing Us (Final Version), 4 min. 33 sec. (you might recognize this one!)

A Vision of Students Today, 4 min. 44 sec.

These clips will serve as a good entree into our discussion next Thursday of online video and how it can be incorporated into your group blogs.

The question is, as the production and global dissemination of video has become ridiculously cheap and easy, what kind of implications does that have for visuals in (professional and amateur) journalism? How about for democracy in general and the press’ traditional role in mediating political messages?

You could also think about these things in light of “digital culture” — a concept that has been sprinkled into our discussions throughout this semester. Do news organizations today get the digital culture playing out on YouTube and in the broader realm of social media?

Yes, these videos are about anthropology and education, but for our purposes I want you to see them in the context of online journalism and its future. For instance, listen to what University of Florida journalism professor Mindy McAdams (the source of this assignment idea) had to say, in describing these very Wesch clips in relation to journalism today:

The newspaper and news industry discussions about what they call user-generated video miss the point. Seriously. All these news orgs fell all over themselves trying to hop on the online video bandwagon as fast as they could. Some of them thought UGC needed to be part of the mix, and some did not, but in either case, the rush to video had much to do with the explosion of YouTube.

The explosion of YouTube was only partly about video.

Only partly about video.

The other parts: community, sharing, communication, identity, self-expression.

Everybody in journalism needs to understand this. This is a huge piece that’s missing from the puzzle of how to save journalism.

Check out Professor McAdams’ notes on the Wesch presentation (and more here):

For Thursday, I’d like you to build on what we learned today by skimming through the whole series of BASIC principles of online journalism:

Now that the Knight News Challenge project is done (whew!), with a couple months for polishing those applications ahead of the new Dec. 15 deadline, it’s time to finish Jeff Jarvis’ book before we get into the big blogging project.

Please finish the reading (p. 119-144), and in the comments section give us your final impressions on the book. Put particular emphasis on the chapter on media; which of the Google rules there feel most applicable (or least), and why? Try to pull this three-part reading together and give us a synthesis of the key takeaway for young journalists today. What do you need to do now?

Get this done by 8 p.m. Monday. Thanks.

Our 8 a.m. class is just a wee bit too early for me to ask a guest speaker on the West Coast to join us live via Skype. Nevertheless, young journalist/innovator extraordinaire David Cohn, founder of the crowdfunding venture Spot.Us that has become one of the most noteworthy winners of the Knight News Challenge, has been kind enough to help us out via this Viddler chat. He has recorded this response to five questions we’ve posed:

1. In your experience and from your perspective, what is innovation in journalism? What does it mean to be a news innovator?

2. How can young journalists develop their ability to be entrepreneurs in media? What kind of mind-set and skill set do they need? What kind of training? etc.

3. Looking at the Knight News Challenge specifically, can you tell us about your own experience in prepping your grant pitch? How did you develop your idea?

4. For students trying to come up with a cool idea for the News Challenge, what do you suggest for inspiration?

5. When you think of key principles for success for the News Challenge or another innovation venture, what comes to mind?

Thanks, David! (p.s. Some recent news about Spot.Us’ expansion to L.A. here.)

We’re preparing to jump into Innovation Week: Next Tuesday I’ll outline the details of the Knight News Challenge project, and we’ll take some time to toss around some initial ideas; then Thursday we’ll delve more fully into the principles and practices of news innovators (and, I hope, hear from one of them in class).

To get you thinking like an innovator, an entrepreneur, like one who can recognize the new rules and opportunities of the digitized media field, let’s learn from one of the best: Google. Jeff Jarvis’ book “What Would Google Do?” attempts to reverse-engineer the company to unpack the elements of its success. As we read this book over the next couple of weeks (beginning with pages 1-69 for Tuesday), I want you to approach this with an eye toward your own project—the one you’re thinking of pitching to the News Challenge. How can this book help you? How might it change your thinking? Which of these principles (these “Google rules”) are important for your pitch?

I have one other piece I’d like to read. It comes from MediaShift, and describes the need for journalism students to have business and entrepreneurial skills—in addition to the core journalistic skills that are the foundation.

As usual, post your comments for discussion in our next class. Have a great weekend!

p.s. Seriously, we were planning this long ago. Honest!
